Broaden the mind without draining the wallet!

by Andrew Regan

Sometimes you just have to get out that list you made many years ago of places you want to visit and make a firm commitment to one day mark some of them off the list. Life is indeed short and there is so much to see and do out there that you’ll wonder if you can afford not to travel!

Edinburgh is a city that makes many peoples' lists and for good reason; it is a major European capital popular for its vibrant culture and unique attractions. Britain’s seventh largest city is accessible and easy to navigate due to its relatively small size and low population - approx. 448,000.

Famous for events such as the Hogmany street party (31st December) and Burns Night (25th January) it is not surprising to learn that Edinburgh is the second most visited tourist destination in the UK after London and attracts around 13 million visitors a year. It cannot offer year-round sunshine but visitors to Scotland have learned to be less demanding when it comes to the weather.

While its scenic locations, such as Arthur’s Seat and inner city cuisine and night life account for much of Edinburgh’s allure, there can be no doubting that its enduring attraction is the world famous Edinburgh Festival, a series of separate events, including film, comedy, music and literature, which runs every summer. Tourists flock to the city during this period amid media hype and a glowing reputation as a must see event.

Edinburgh is also Europe’s sixth largest financial services centre, lending further evidence of the city’s strong economic growth. Indeed it attracts many job seekers and those seeking the benefits of city living without the over population. This economic strength is nicely balanced by multicultural communities mixing freely within a city that somehow manages to allow each to add their own distinctive style to the beautiful surroundings. Edinburgh’s universities have also proved to be an extremely popular choice drawing large numbers of students every year, many of whom from overseas.

It won’t come as a shock to find out that this popular European destination is well serviced by airlines and hotels in Edinburgh can be easily found throughout the city as it continues to enhance its excellent reputation in the field of tourism.

Many famous names, past and present, are associated with Edinburgh and they help add a touch of class to a city which requires little assistance in this regard. Nonetheless, having a coffee in the same seat used by JK Rowling when writing Harry Potter makes for a terrific tale to make your friends back home jealous! What's more, the city is not as expensive as other European hotspots, and with a little pre-planning your money can go a long way.
