Bristol’s best, on two wheels or two legs

by Matthew Pressman

As the most populous city in south-west England and a finalist for the 2008 European Capital of Culture, Bristol is an often-overlooked gem of a city, with a long history dating back as far as the 11th century, and a stunning harbour setting by the River Avon. This compact city is a great place for a short city-break in one of the many Bristol hotels that are in the area, or even a longer holiday, given its great location by the sea and its proximity to two capital cities – Cardiff AND London, both of which are easily accessible as day-trips.

But within Bristol itself, there is plenty to do, and at specific times of the year it’s a great place for outdoor activities such as jogging and cycling.

Indeed, one of the UK’s biggest, free ‘non-competitive’ cycling events takes place in Bristol annually, and is now in its fifteenth year. ‘Bristol’s Biggest Bike Ride’ takes place on Sunday 22nd June 2008, and provides a great opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to take part in a fun activity, exploring the neighbouring countryside as well as the city of Bristol itself.

There is a choice of routes ranging from 9 to 38 miles, so this is a great event for first-timers and experienced cyclists alike. However, although it is a free cycling event, it also provides a great opportunity for those who are looking to raise money for a charity of their choice, and many good causes have been supported in previous years thanks to participants in Bristol’s Biggest Bike Ride.

But if two wheels don’t appeal, then there is always the option of using two legs instead, by taking part in any of the numerous fun runs and races that are organised in Bristol annually. Whilst the Bristol 10k in May and the Half-Marathon in September may appeal to countless people looking to combine a challenging run with a visit to a new city, there are also less arduous tests on offer too.

The British Heart Foundation’s ‘Bristol Harbour Fun Run’ takes place annually, and is a relatively easy 2.5 mile route, that can be traversed by runners, joggers and walkers at their own pace, ensuring the run is, indeed, a fun one.

Of course, no reason is needed to visit any new city anywhere in the world; merely a desire to try something different and go somewhere new. Getting away, even for a long weekend, can work wonders for the body and soul, and with a plethora of hotels in Bristol to choose from, signing up for a fun run or other such activity will provide the necessary incentive to just go for it.
