How To Become More Technically Able

by Anna Stenning

My knowledge of all things technical is unfortunately extremely limited. However, they are improving as my continual and gradual growth in technical equipment increases each day, improves my knowledge on technical setups and buying accessories (though much improvement would do me no harm I'm sure). One of things I have discovered when planning on embarking upon studying for a filmmaking course is that I will need to know the differences between cable connectors and cable accessories.

Such is the case for many people wanting to learn how to use a film camera as opposed sticking to a normal DV camera, it makes for much more interesting filming and learning. Knowing what cable accessories to buy, proves to be a problem for those who lacking in technical abilities. When taking up a course or being productive with any kind of technological equipment, one will need to move away from their comfort zone and begin learning the ropes of all things technical.

There are easier ways of becoming technically minded and improving these skills without having to resort to an expensive course. First things first are to read up on technical books, manuals, instructions and forums. Simple books such as those that provide information on the basics to electrical supplies, cable accessories, cables, connectors, wires, wiring etc will help in expanding your knowledge quickly and efficiently.

If you spend a lot of time on the internet it would be a good idea to download a free tutorial, these are readily available on any technical website or if you know not of any website specific to this topic then your best bet would be to put in a search in Google and find some free information online. These tutorials provide you step-by-step instructions on using various devices, resolve technical problems, instructions on how to use certain equipments and how to set up certain devices.

Another fun way of improving your technical skills is to befriend some techy geeks! As much as this may sound awful to dub them as geeks, but one will argue that anyone with a strong focus on a specific subject shows a degree of enthusiasm as opposed to being automatically labelled as geek. However, this is a great way to learn from someone technically passionate about various devices and technical skills. They will also provide a demonstration on certain projects and help you with any issues you may come across.

Technology magazines that focus on providing advice on technically skilled work is another way of keeping up with updated and new information. This can be helpful for those just learning and wanting to keep up with the latest information, equipment and devices. This in turn will also provide a newbie techy on latest electrical products and where to purchase them on affordable prices.

It is all about experimenting, practising, playing around with gadgets and becoming familiar with things. Above you must enjoy the process, otherwise there is no point in doing it.
