Data Recovery From Recordable and Rewritable CDs

by Jameswalsh

Buying and storing CDs is a great option as they are cheap and can be stored easily. In fact, the cost per MB of data offered by CDs is far lower than other data storage devices.

What Are Rewritable CDs?

CDs come in various formats but the most popular format of CD remains the rewritable format. Rewritable format CDs are one of the few data storage devices that allow you to write data onto the data storage device as many times as you want. Therefore, while using a rewritable format CD, all a user has to do is delete the previous data to store the new data.

Rewritable CDs are erasable, recordable and re-recordable. Their popularity can be attributed to all the above-mentioned features. The rewritable CDs use a phase-changing data layer film that responds to heat. Data is created into the film via laser light beams. These beams melt bits of data into the film. When the temperature of the laser is adjusted, these bits of data can be rewritten upon or erased.

What Are the Common Causes of Data Loss From Optical Disks?

Optical disks, like any other electronic data storage media, are fragile and prone to damage. Therefore, data loss incidents due to physical and logical errors are very common when users use optical media such as CDs and DVDs. CDs and DVDs are more at risk of data loss because of the carelessness of the users.

Most people do not handle the optical disks with caution. In fact, the storage of these disks is often not appropriate. Improper storage and handling is one the major reasons for data loss from optical disks. Since CDs and DVDs are very prone to scratches, the data contained therein is at huge risk. Due to these scratches, the surface of the optical disk gets ruined very easily.

Often users are not aware how delicate the optical media can be. Therefore, they tend to hold the surface of the optical disk with their fingers. Repeatedly touching the surface of the disk with your fingers can lead to a data loss tragedy.

CDs and DVDs offer limited data storage capacity. To offset this limitation, most users tend to store large amounts of data on multiple CDs or DVDs. However, in such cases, locating data afterwards can be a problem. Therefore, users prefer to label their optical disks in order to locate the data easily as and when they need it. However, most people tend to use labels that contain harsh chemical preparations. Furthermore, some people do not use the label side to put these labels. All these careless mistakes can ruin the data stored on the optical disks.

People have a habit of using the CDs or DVDs and then keeping them on their desk after using them. However, if there are any liquids or dust on the table, chances of your optical disk getting spoilt are very high. In addition, not many people know that dust and direct sunlight are the worst enemies of optical disks. Therefore, it is very common to see people leaving behind their CDs and DVDs lying around on their car dashboard while the car scorches under the sun. Direct sunlight can damage the data on the optical disks completely.

How Can You Get The Lost Data Recovered?

If you have lost your valuable data from your CD or DVD, you have two options in front of you; you can either opt for professional data recovery services or you can buy a DIY data recovery software. Your choice will depend on the value of your data. If your data is highly valuable and losing it may have substantial financial or emotional losses, you may want to choose professional data recovery service. However, since professional data recovery service can be expensive, if you cannot afford it, you can buy a DIY data recovery software.

What Features Should You Look For in DIY Data Recovery Software For Rewritable CDs?

The software should be able to retrieve all types of files. There are times when certain DIY software do not work on zipped files.

Make sure that you check the retrieval specifications before buying a DIY data recovery software. It should specify that the recovery software works for rewritable CDs as well.

The software should be able to work for scratches, defective, or damaged rewritable CDs.

It should have easy-to-understand instructions and no technical jargon.
