Is Wii The Games Industry\'s Saviour? by Paul Clough |
|
Today there are many people who claim that the Nintendo Wii is a complete failure as it is just an expensive gadget without any meaning. However industry reports show otherwise.
The Nintendo Wii has been able to achieve the position of the top grosser in all the major markets that it has entered into. The console has been able to outsell every other video game model by developers like Microsoft and Sony since its release.
In fact the company claims to have engineered a successful marketing campaign that the industry has never seen before.
Take the example of the holiday season in Japan and USA. Chances of you buying yourself a Nintendo Wii are unlikely as the demand is more than supply. People were waiting in lines for hours to get their hands on the latest Nintendo Wii even after a year of the console being introduced.
The device's popularity has been cooling to a certain extent but that is expected after a year of the device being introduced. In fact the Nintendo Wii still has a market for the next 3 to 4 years after which it may be replaced with a better console.
Hence regardless of the arguments against the Wii it still has captured a major share of the market but to term it as a savior would be a misnomer. The Wii is really a very lovely device but its developers think that it may soon become a fad. The Wii seems to have a little lacking in terms of graphics. Hence many people play it for an hour or so and then return home to play on their own PS3 consoles.
At the same time the Wii cannot be called a disaster. Out of every eight game consoles sold today five or from Wii. In case of software there was only one Wii game (Madden NFL 08) that didn't make it to the top ten.
However Nintendo finds itself in a little bit of trouble with third party developers. What happened to Nintendo 64 and Gamecube. Though reports show that sales are great it does not mean that people are playing the game regularly. Also people buy Wii after they have played it at a friend's house but the chances of them getting bored after playing the same games are many.
This is the same story with other game console such as those of Microsoft and Sony but recent reports suggest that people are still buying the software titles of Xbox 360 in large numbers which suggest that people are still using competitor's consoles. Hence the Wii has got mixed comments and reactions from the critics.
The final verdict is that the Nintendo Wii is neither a flop nor a fad. Nintendo is soon thinking of plans to come out with the new game console after Wii when the console will fade out in the next three to four years. |
