Tips For Winning A Local Political Office

by Adrian Adams

Many candidates who are otherwise perfectly qualified to run for political office fail simply because they did not take the time to draw up a campaign plan or a road map to victory? Drawing up a campaign plan allows you to see what your pitfalls are and where your strengths lie. It also helps you to get a better estimate on the funds you would need to run your campaign as well as the best places where you are likely to find it.

Here are some tips that will come in very handy if you are running for any political office:

Be Active Locally

Whether you intend running for congressman or city council, remember that it is the people in the community that campaign for and ultimately elect the candidate. Participate in local events, volunteer at different organizations and get to know the people in your community. These people are your future voters and making the time and effort to get to know them better, will give you the leverage you need.

Embrace the Issues that are important to the Voters

Devise a campaign message that is in sync with your voters. Assuming that your issues are the same as their issues is one of the biggest mistakes you could make. Do some research; read the local papers; check out the letters to the editor; go to as many civic meetings as you can; read opinion polls. All these resources will give you a fairly good idea as to what the concerns of the community are. Focusing on the issues that concern the community and not your personal issues is the key to getting those all-important votes. On your campaign agenda include plans for fixing existing problems as well as your plans for preventing or sorting out future issues.

Form a Core Campaign Committee

Appoint a capable core committee that possibly consists of a campaign manager, campaign treasurer, speech write and public relations manager as well as a volunteer coordinator. It's almost impossible to go it alone. You are better of focusing on core issues while leaving the public relations, fund raising and other campaign related issues to those who are more experienced in it.

Understand the Political Process

Each office has its own rules and regulations for filing. It is important to learn the local, state and federal laws regarding elections and try and follow them to the letter when running for political office. Learn the skills necessary for the elected office.
