Drum Tabs A Must for Drummers

by Amit Kheterpal

Drum tabs is basically a form of sheet music for drummers. It is like a shorthand notation of the normal drum notation. The purpose of the drum tabs is that it helps the author write long drum notation text and then make sure that there are copies of that available to drummers. Instead they use drum tabs which are in shorthand and hence save time considerably.

The bets way of course is to learn to play drums using the standardized drum notation and also take private lessons or coaching classes to learn the actual music notation. But most drummers start playing drums as a hobby and hence do not have time to take lessons so these drum tabs help them in learning music fast an playing their part as a drummer.

If you search online then you will find thousands of drum tabs available for all styles of music and also there are drum lesson available at thousands of sites. These websites have drum tabs for various bands and rock groups like the Beach Boys Drum Tabs, Beatles Gutair Tabs, Blly Joel Drum Tabs and several others.
The tablature form of music notation is very common where the basic aim is to represent the music based on the actions that the drummer will take as opposed to the putting down the music that will result from the actions.

The tabs have various symbols that denote a variety of things and I am giving a few examples like
-o- means strike or -O- means Accent or -g- means ghost note and there are several more.

Also there are different symbols for using the cymbals as most drummers play cymbals and drums alongside. That said what you need to know is really how the drum tablature is read and then how the tabs are played using those symbols.

The guitar tabs usually do not convey the timing information correctly but in the case of the drum tabs this is conveyed perfectly so that you as a drummer do not have to fret about timing.

So go ahead and get your drum tabs to get started fast. There are several elements involved in learning any sort of music and the best way to learn them is to learn by coaching. My recommendation would be to find a coaching class in your area and enrol there. As a drummer drum tabs can help you but to a certain extent and to reach the expert level you need to learn drum the hard way.
