Guitars: Today\'s Most Popular Musical Instruments

by Jim Brown

The most popular musical instruments used by country music artists today are the guitars. During any performance at the Grand Ole Opry, a musician can be seen playing a bass, steel guitar, electric guitar or a guitar made from polished woods. The stage at the Grand Ole Opry will be filled with musicians that have other popular musical instruments too such as the banjo, fiddle, and violin and some might have smaller musical instruments tucked away in a pocket somewhere.

Many music artists gained their start in the music industry simply because they could play these musical instruments well. Most country music singers have developed songwriting skills while learning to strum guitars in a barn when they were young. Many of the notes played on these popular musical instruments will be tested for tone many times before they are finally committed to paper. In all likelihood, before the song is finally finished, some songwriters will find that they are hoarse after such an ordeal.

In most cases, a songwriter will test the music scores they have written out on a captured audience. Modern day music artists will usually test songs out using guests that they have invited over for dinner. Cowboys were known to strum music out on popular musical instruments while watching herds in a field. Young cowboys had to be more inventive and would often introduce their new musical scores to any animal housed in a barn. A cow, horse, sheep or gaggle of ducks could be in the audience and it was a safe bet that no music scores would bring any complaints.

Drums are popular music instruments that are often used to open shows. Crowds get very inspired and invigorated when they hear the methodical percussions played over the public address systems. These popular music instruments are used to advertise band logos and the female members of the audience often pursue drummers after the music performance is finished for the night. Drums are the heartbeat of any music played on a stage, and many music performances seem dull without them playing in the background.

Electric guitars have been popular musical instruments for many types of music. Rock bands will feature guitar solos that rivet the audience because the spellbinding music that comes from this musical instrument is often loud. A musician can convey many feelings through this popular musical instrument and crowds respond almost immediately. The electric guitar would seem useless without its amplifying counterpart and the foot pedals that are set on the stage before the music event starts.

Steel guitars use metal strings and metal accessories that make country music come alive. Country music artists like the versatility of this popular musical instrument because it can be played while a person is sitting down. Other musical instruments will chime in often, but the familiar chords of the steel guitar will ring clear over those musical sounds. The steel guitar uses pedals and levers to produce various musical notes and a music artist is considered talented when they are able to produce music using all of the mechanisms at one time.
