In the United States it's a forgone conclusion that if your woman is the traditional type your wedding engagement ring should be set with a diamond (this is not necessarily the case in the rest of the world.) but there can be quite a bit of disparity of opinion when it comes to the band of the ring

The choice of bands comes down to the following metals: yellow gold, white gold, rose gold, platinum, silver, and titanium.

Platinum is more precious than gold and is the most expensive of all of these bands. A platinum band will usually cost about twice as much as a gold band. Platinum is a gray white metal that is resistant to corrosion.

Titanium is the cheapest choice. It's a light and strong metal. It's as strong as steel but it's much lighter than steel.

These metals can be used on their own but they are also often used in combinations. When two metals are combined it's called a "two tone" ring and when three metals are combined it's called a "tri-colored ring."

Certainly if you can afford it you should go with a gold or platinum ring. Whether or not you choose the gold or the platinum really depends on your woman's preference. You may of course want to keep this a surprise from her before asking for her hand in marriage and presenting to her the perfect engagement ring so what you can do is try and figure out what kind of jewelry she likes through small talk. This may be difficult without it seeming too obvious but give it your best try!

Once you have some idea what kind of metal she wants then you can look and see what you can find that will fit in your budget. The usual convention (conventional wisdom) is that you should spend two months salary on the ring. For someone who works at McDonalds at a hamburger flipper this will obviously be a much smaller amount than say, the CEO of McDonalds!
