Bringing Back The Old Days

by Andrew Beene

"Last month, I have visited an old friend of mine. Her name is Reizhalene, a classmate in elementary. It was a nice tour in her place in Florida. Great attractions, a must see. When I reached her residence, her house maid welcomed me with a smile, “Hello Madame, welcome to our place.” And I was amazed with their concrete floors in Florida.

From the moment that the maid opened the door, it’s the flooring that I have noticed first. It’s totally a different setting there. And as I entered inside and stepped on the concrete floors, I heard a voice calling out my name.

“Andy!”

The voice belongs to Reizhalene. Followed by another sentence.

“I really miss you!”

Confirmed. She is my long lost friend. She always missed me even when were just kids. Memories came playing on my mind. Reminiscing the old days. She’s totally different now. Aside from having her own family, she already came out of her shell. She became a beautiful butterfly now. Contrary to the times when we were just lads. She was satisfied watching the other kids playing around. She never played with anyone, but me. She was not that gregarious. She doesn’t trust anyone, but me. Only me. But we are happy. We find ways to find enjoyment.

My reminiscing stage abruptly disturbed by her question.

“Have you missed me, Andy?”

Tears burst upon my eyes. I didn’t manage to answer. All I do was embraced her. And I cried. Harder, harder than what she did. I missed her so much. So much than what she do. I missed the old times, the long hours of our elementary class, the never ending chatting, playing, and chasing around the playground, with her, with just the two of us. It’s like that we have created our own world that cannot be entered by strangers.

Silence. Until I bring back my own self. I open my mouth to ask her an irrelevant question.

“Is this how you made concrete in Florida?” Just to make segue.

While wiping her tears, she answered, “Yes, Fl concrete contractors do it that way. Is there any problem about that?”

“Uhm, nothing, it’s just that, I admire your flooring in Florida. It’s totally different. Great!”

“We also have here polished concrete in Florida. Uhm, are we talking about flooring here? It’s been a decade since the last day we’ve met. Do you want some tea?”

“Gee, thanks. It’s a long and tiring travel that I’ve been.”

She invited me to the dining room. And that was the start of the never ending chatting, laughing, sobbing in tears, reminiscing, and all the crazy stuff. I really miss those times. And we are all grown-ups now, the kids before turns into matured individuals now. How fast the time has passed! We wonder where are our former classmates and friends were right now. How the two of us wish that the old days would come back!

It is nice to bring back the highlights of our childhood days, golden memories that you will surely treasure with all your life. Do you also have the said story?
