My Pipes Are Always Rattling, Should I Call A Plumber?

by Andy Kaplan

If you’ve ever experienced the pipes in your house rattling when you turn your water off, you aren’t alone. Rattling pipes are referred to as water hammer. Water Hammer occurs when the motion of water comes to an abrupt stop or suddenly the water changes direction of flow in your pipes. You may find that you can stop the rattling noise by insulating the pipe. This may include wrapping the pipe with a towel or blanket, and can be an effective way to control the rattling.

You can treat water hammer by recharging the water supply. By recharging the water supply, you will increase the amount of air in the pipes which, in turn, causes the water to flow freely. To begin, you will need to turn off the main water supply valve, and then open all the faucets so that when you turn the water back on, it will help the water to flow freely. You should begin by turning on all of the water faucets, and then when you turn on the main valve; begin shutting the faucets off, one at a time, beginning with the faucet that is lowest in the home. If this doesn’t solve the problem, you should contact a plumber.
