When I Turn On The Faucet, I Hear A Loud Whining Sound. Is Something Broken?

by Andy Kaplan

Usually, when you hear a whining sound in your faucet, the cause is that you have air trapped in your pipes that shouldn’t be there. There may be other reasons such as a loose washer, but air tends to be the most common problem. You may want to check the washer first, before you begin to check the pipes for air.

If the problem is caused by air, you will need to push the air out of the pipes. To do this, you can turn the water faucet on, then, while the water faucet is still on, turn the main water valve off. This will turn off the main water and your faucet’s water will turn off. Then when you turn the main water valve back on, any air in the pipe will be flushed out. This should solve the problem.

In addition, you may find that the problem isn’t caused by air in the pipes, but possibly in the valves under the sink. To check this, turn the main water off and take apart the valves under your sink. You should check the valves and then reassemble them. If this doesn’t solve your problem, you may want to contact a plumber.
