Landscape Architecture – To scape or not to scape

by marysummers

Landscape architecture involves the analysis and design of natural and built spaces. Landscape architects differ from landscape designers, as they are equipped with specialized skills, education and professional training. Landscape designers on the other hand, lack these professional qualifications. Modern landscape architectural design helps in the more efficient and aesthetic use of spaces, yards, lawns and open environs. Some examples include Central Park in New York, the preservation and restoration Yosemite Park and Niagra falls and Sursam Cordon affordable housing in Washington D.C.

The Process Behind Landscape Architecture

Landscape architecture process differs from architect to architect depending on each individual’s approach, but follows the following general pattern –

In the pre-planning stage the clients discusses their thoughts and preferences with the architect in order to arrive at a scope and timeline for the project. At the end of this period, you will receive a proposed budget and statement of work. You will be required to sign a contract with the architect.

The site is analyzed by the architect and in the project planning stage, the architect develops a list of alternative and development ideas which you need to approve. Further preliminary details are ironed out.

After the review of the site, usage structure and environmental conditions the architect creates presentation drawings as part of preliminary design stage. These help you to understand the overall concept of the landscape architect. Initial cost estimates are also provided for your approval

The landscape design process now enters the final design stage where preliminary design is further refined and initial cost estimates are revised wherever required. Initial construction documentation begins after the concept is further detailed and material is selected.

You are now required to approve further detailed drawings and specifications in the documentation stage. A set of construction documents is given to you by the architect to assist in the bidding with contractors.

The involvement of the landscape architect in the final executions stage depends on the terms of your contract with him/her.

The Nitty Gritty

A landscape architect helps –

Analyze available space and discusses possible uses for it based on usability and aesthetics

Analyze the environment and suggest alternative use based on usability and aesthetics

Determine the feasibility of proposed use of space

With expertise and eye for design, they can be very useful in suggesting the best possible uses for a particular space.

They can also impart advice on the use of patios, walkways and fences.

This advice though does not come free or even cheap. Better and cheaper alternatives include, trusting your own design skills and instincts or using landscape architecture software. These are readily available in the market and are quite useful in determining the various possibilities for your home. Landscape design software comes with specific information regarding things you might need, and approximate cost.
