Gaining Control Over Your Anxiety

by Kristine Anne Gonzaga

Anxiety is among the most popular disorders treated in the United States today. With the rapidly increasing cost of health care, people who are suffering from anxiety and other related disorders are having a difficult time getting treatment and the necessary prescription. As such, some are resorting to personalized home care in managing and controlling their anxiety. While at-home anxiety management is good, it is only effective if practiced for minimal and immediate anxiety problems. If you are considering anxiety home care to minimize doctor visits, read on for tips on gaining anxiety control:

1.Get informed.
If you are already undergoing medical treatment for your anxiety, inform your doctor of your intention to practice home care to control your anxiety. But before pursuing this, ask your doctor for advice on anxiety management and other stress-relieving techniques that you can use. However, also schedule regular appointments with your doctor to monitor your progress in controlling you anxiety. Schedule appointments once or twice a month, depending on what you and your doctor feel best regarding your condition.

2.Have supplies to manage anxiety symptoms at home.
Anxiety can be accompanied by a number of physical symptoms. You may have an upset stomach, diarrhea, trouble breathing, or feel as if you may faint. As such, it is important to have medications and remedies for these conditions at home. Being ready will minimize your anxiety and avoid causing more worries should you have an attack at home. Having supplies can also boost your confidence that you can handle your anxiety at home.

3.Prepare for exposure to situations or things that trigger anxiety attacks.
Primary treatment for anxiety is done by removing the cause. In cases of anxiety disorders rooted in physical ailments, treatment takes the form of medication for the particular injury or sickness that causes the anxiety. However, if the causes of anxiety are unavoidable events like taking exams, driving, or speaking in public, the best that you can do is to prepare. Review for exams, practice driving, or take speech classes to minimize the anxiety you feel when faced with these situations.

4.Talk to a supportive and positive-minded friend.
Talking is an essential part of anxiety treatment. Instead of paying for a psychologist or counselor, you can enlist the help and support of a positive-minded friend. Anxiety develops out of fear that bad things will happen when everything is just blown out of proportion. Talking to a friend who can help you see what the real score is and offer positive advice is a real help in managing and controlling your anxiety.

5.Practice different stress-relieving and anxiety management techniques.
There are a number of anxiety and stress-relieving techniques that you can practice to help you manage and control your anxiety. You can try deep-breathing exercises, long, warm baths, aromatherapy, yoga, and meditation to manage anxiety attacks. Doing mild exercises and keeping a balance diet are also good methods to manage anxiety.

While home care is great for managing anxiety, do not forget to take your medications if such are prescribed by your doctor. Regular checkups and follow-ups with your doctor are also necessary. Keep in mind that home care techniques are designed to supplement professional anxiety treatment, not to replace it.
