“Poker is rigged”- Hard to Ignore

by Jacob Nelson

After spotting several accusations, assumptions, allegations and outright assertions that people who run online poker rooms rig the games it has become hard to ignore the phrase that “Poker is rigged”.

The first accusations that were levied against the Absolute Poker though there were similar accusations made against other online poker rooms. Some player cheated the game by using a sort of "god mode" or "super user account” that would allow them to see other players' hole cards during the play of hands, either in tournaments or in a cash game setting. To get deep into this matter a Web site was created to track these particular online players and it was successful to bring out the underlying facts. For instance the first clue of suspects arises when it is found that the accounts in question had played in lower buy-in tournaments with little to no success and then suddenly jumps into the larger events and winning right off.

It would be insane for these online poker rooms to rig any game and let alone the largest ones that they offer. Care should be taken that the poker players feel at ease playing while poker online. They should be confident about their financial security and should have trust that if something likes this happens any day then they will be provided with full support on their site. Therefore software developers should emphasize some method of testing their software to make sure the particular parts of an online poker game work. Besides this there is a need for the online world to be regulated and guided by some authority, be it governmental or institutional to avoid such rigging.

eCOGRA (e-Commerce Online Gaming Regulation and Assurance) has been able to offer their "Play It Safe" seal to more than 100 online casinos and poker rooms after going through rigorous testing procedure and in addition it also offers a dispute mediation program that allows the victimize by one of its member sites to be heard by an independent arbitrator. But eCOGRA, is not sufficient to the task although it provides a worthy service therefore it is important for those individual countries or perhaps a world organization to establish regulation and licensing programs and furthermore with the regulation, there should be an independent authority with execution powers that would guarantee that everything is on the right track. With all these security functionality and governmental approval the online poker rooms will then be truly operating where the online players would have no doubt on the believability of playing in them.
