Learning to Play Blackjack Online and in the Casino

by Gene Marshall

For the most part, blackjack is one of the more simple card games to learn how to play. After all, each player needs to merely take his place at the card table, make a wager (if the game involves placing bets), receive two cards from the dealer, take a look at the dealer’s two cards, and then determine whether or not he wants the dealer to “hit” him with another card. Based on this simplification of the game, it appears that it is not so difficult to learn how to play blackjack. However, as in most hobbies, sports and disciplines, the deeper you go into the activity the finer and the more numerous and nuanced details begin to appear.

According to blackjack experts, there are many ways to increase your chances at winning. For those who use the blackjack strategy of card counting to actually predict what cards he will be dealt, the player can increase his blackjack odds. One way of doing this is having the good fortune of sitting in the “third base seat.” This is the place that is farthest to the dealer’s right hand side and therefore the last player to receive cards from the dealer, with the advantage of being able to see the cards of those who came before and making decisions accordingly.

Card counting is completely legal in casino blackjack rules. However, it is an entirely useless tactic if you are playing online casino blackjack. The reason that card counting fails as a blackjack strategy online is because after each round, the online deck of cards is reshuffled, totally eliminating the use of counting. Thus, when playing internet blackjack your best strategy is to go back to basics. This means, it is necessary to do your research, read a few articles about blackjack and the different approaches and types of the game, and learn tips on betting, when to get out or go higher, all of which are available on the Internet.

In essence, casino blackjack and online blackjack should be considered two different games. In the former, you approach the dealer as a friend and remember that you are playing against the house and not the dealer him or herself. Therefore, there is a human behavior factor to take into account when learning your blackjack game. Online however, that human element is removed and you are challenged more by the odds and perhaps your luck, as well.

An advantage to playing blackjack online, however, is that you have unlimited resources to learn about this game. Many blackjack sites offer free blackjack software so that you can play a game from your home computer at no cost to you. After awhile though, if you are interested in moving beyond the free blackjack offer and getting into the vibrant culture of blackjack online, you have many options that will handle your game and your information securely and efficiently. In no time at all, you may be winning your very first online blackjack tournament.
