Selecting the right Valentine’s Day bed

by Victoria Cochrane

Valentine’s Day is this week, meaning many couples will have spent varying amounts of time and money looking for gifts and organising events for the evening, and hoping the holiday will pass without disappointment. Despite its commercialisation, the day can be one of the most romantic of the year, and can serve as an excuse for a busy couple to set aside some time to spend together.

If you do have plans with your significant other this year and you intend for the date to end back at your place, a few easy steps can turn your simple sleeping quarters to the romantic boudoir of your dreams.

First of all, make sure the room is tidy. Dirty dishes, old magazines and a strewn stack of CDs are unlikely to be conducive to any amorous proceedings, and neither is that brimming-over rubbish bin. Also remember to turn off your phone, laptop and any other distractions on the night.

Lighting will be crucial to set the mood, but if you’re not lucky enough to have light dimmers, consider swapping bulbs to a lower wattage or even coloured bulbs to wash the room with a soft, warm glow. If you know your significant other is a fan of musical artists that would lend themselves to the occasion, then CDs of their music would be a nice addition. Also remember to accessorise the room with bouquets of his or her favourite flowers.

When it comes to the bed, keep in mind that it should be the focal point of the room, even if you do have a spectacular view from your bedroom window. Make sure your bed has an excellent mattress, such as memory foam or a pocket sprung mattress, bed frame and sleeping pillows. When selecting bedding, choose sheets that feel good against your skin and denote luxury – for this occasion satin or silk would probably be ideal. Dress the bed with the plumpest pillows and duvet you can find. They might not stay on the bed for long, but it’s all about setting the scene for the evening’s proceedings.

Valentine’s Day often makes its detractors point out the commercialisation and schmaltz attached to the holiday, but ultimately it is all about you and your significant other spending time together. Keeping the aforementioned points in mind will hopefully, along with the requisite chocolate and flowers, make this Valentine’s Day one to remember.
