You don't have to be a rocket scientist to realize that babies grow very quickly. Buying one size ahead will save you a lot of money in the long run and the baby can still wear clothes that are a little baggy!
If you are buying an outfit for a party, make sure that you buy darker colored clothing for the baby. Darker colors hide stains better and won't need cleaned as often.
When in doubt you can err on the side of caution. Buying cloth baby wipes and spit up cloths can be a life saver to a new parent. Baby cloths are usually sold in a pack of 12 plain white cotton cloths. They are great for catching any food or liquid that often comes out of a baby. You would be surprised how many baby cloths parents can go through and buying four or five dozen can be an ideal gift.
You can find high quality used baby clothes, often getting as many as 4 or 5 outfits for the price of a new one. Since babies grow so fast, often their outgrown clothes show little to no wear. Stores like Babies-R-Us and Kid to Kid have a large selection. You can always look in your local papers and online discount suppliers for any type of discounts that are available for baby clothing as well.
