Moving To Another State

by Nir Dotan

My family and I sat at the kitchen table for our weekly family conference. Unemployment is very bad in our area. Both of us had been laid off yet again. So we contemplated moving to another state.

We discussed the ramifications of residential relocation with our children. They are older and have many friends in the area as do we. We also wanted to consider the effects on our other family members. This was not a decision lightly made. After quite a bit of discussion we decided it would be in our best interest. So we began looking at the neighboring state. It would keep up within easy traveling distance of friends and family.

We contacted a company that specializes in residential relocation. They assisted us with choosing a community with low cost housing, good schools and employment. We dug into our small savings and enlisted the help of our friends and family and began packing our lives into boxes. Moving is stressful in the best of circumstance. Moving to another state, starting new jobs, new schools and meeting new people adds to the stress.

The family and I began making quick trips to our new town. We met our new neighbors, toured the schools and began the process of fitting into our new community. Residential relocation takes as much time and planning as any other move.

The children needed to be registered with their new schools. We needed to have medical records transferred to new doctors offices. We placed change of address cards in with the post office so we wouldn't miss any of our mail and established utility services with new companies. We had some time constraints because we wanted to be settled before the new school year but did not want to make it any more hectic than necessary.

Moving day arrived and we were completely packed. The pets were boarded at our new veterinarians office so that they would have an easier time adjusting and were not underfoot. The company specializing in residential relocation we had contacted originally had given us a list of moving companies with reasonable rates. We chose not to use a moving company it would be less expensive to have our friends and family help us move. The caravan of trucks, cars, and trailers was ready to go; we took one last look around our home.

We arrived at our new home an uneventful trip. Our friends and family were excited to see our new residence. We unloaded the vehicles one at a time, unpacking boxes as they came into the house. Finally, we were done. All the extra hands made it go so much faster. We smiled with satisfaction as we celebrated with a large cook out. Residential relocation does not have to be a nightmare if you plan properly and enlist help through a professional company or from those closest to you.
