Homemade Presents Make Truly Unique Baby Gifts

by Chris Campbell

If you've been to as many baby showers as I have, you've probably seen just about every baby gift imaginable. There's the very practical items such as bottles, bassinets, baby pajamas and booties. As well as the fun presents like toys, gadgets, dress up clothes, and other more decorative items. After a while, it all starts to look pretty much the same. Even the wrapping, bows, and gift cards start to look the same after a while. Probably because they are. Ever been to a shower, where two or three of the exact same cards show up. It's almost like showing up to the prom in the same dress as someone else.

While I'm sure the expectant mom says nothing, wouldn't it be nice, if you knew the gifts you purchase for the newest member of her family were both unique and memorable. It's a special occasion after all, you don't want your gifts to be from the same boring stuff you've seen dozens of times.

There is a solution to this baby gift dilemma, and it is handmade baby gifts. Don't panic, you don't have to be exceptionally skilled in the arcane arts of needlepoint, knitting, crocheting, or silver smithing. You just need a little imagination, and some thoughtful time to put into what will be a truly memorable and unique baby gift. Even if your a little short on imagination, we can help out there as well.

Of course, if you do have any of the aforementione skills, the go ahead and use them. A hand crafted set of mittens or booties, or blanket, or pajamas will surely be appreciated and cherished far more then something from the local mall.

There are other handmade gifts that will be appreciated just as well. Scrap booking is a favorite past time of many these days. Even if you've never done it before, it's easy to do. There are plenty of kits you can purchase and to get you started. After that, as long as you can run a pair of scissors and a bottle of glue, your set to go. A special keepsake made up of photos from the new baby's early days with friends and family interspersed, will make an extra special gift that will be cherished for years.

If your an avid baker or cook, then making a few desserts or dinner for a mom whose incredibly busy just trying to keep up in her new role, will be incredibly appreciated. While the gifts of food may not be cherished for years, the memory of your thoughtfulness will.

If you've never heard of diaper cakes, you should investigate it. They're not as gross as they sound ;) Anyone one can put one together. There's plenty of sites with instructions online. They're fun to make, and fun to give. I'm sure that mom and dad will appreciate how practical they can be as well
