Women and Divorce – Ten Tips on How to Survive

by jameswalsh

The implications of divorce on their immediate lifestyle are immense. They find themselves all alone again, with no one around who can provide them a shoulder to lean on.

The wives blame themselves for divorce and go into a depression. It is a serious situation which, if not treated, may lead to suicidal tendencies. Women also face a financial crunch after marital separation because most of them tend to leave their jobs when they have children and become full-time home-makers. Their situation becomes tougher if they have to bring up children as well as do a job.

Women thus find themselves in a tough situation after divorce. However, there are many things they can do to ease their problems. The following tips may be of some help.

See a Mediator

Divorce mediators are professionals who can help both of you through the process of divorce. They are of immense help in enabling you to reach an agreement on all the contentious issues and differences such as division of property and child custody, and helping you part company with your partner on good terms.

It is a good idea not to involve solicitors in the beginning. They often make the relationship deteriorate further. You will gain tremendously if mediation is successful, because it costs much less and avoids a lot of bad blood between you and your partner.

See a Solicitor

If mediation fails, then you have no option but to contact a high-street solicitor. This is particularly essential if your husband is not interested in mediation or is otherwise acting hostile and uncooperative. The lawyers have special knowledge, training and experience to represent and protect your interests in a court of law. There are many legal loopholes and traps that you may become a victim of. Solicitors will help you wade through the stormy legal waters of divorce.

Put Divorce in Perspective

Divorce is a major setback to you in your life. However, it is still a setback from which recovery is very much possible. It is, therefore, essential for you to keep the divorce in perspective and have an attitude of “In five years, I won’t even remember these days.” It is not the end of the world. Instead, you should consider it a new challenge, the beginning of a fresh chapter in life. Remember, you can emerge from divorce a much stronger and matured person than what you were before.

Think of the Brighter Side

What you have to keep in mind through your ordeal is that even divorce can have a bright side. You must learn to focus on it and all the positives that may be yielded by the episode. For example, you have regained your personal freedom and can move on to new exciting relationships. The stress and tension of your marriage is no more. You can keep all your money to yourself and enjoy the liberation that living alone brings. You are no longer accountable to anyone for your actions.

Make Co-parenting Successful

If you have children, you owe it to them to be a good mom. For this, it is important that you remain on good terms with your husband, regardless of how much you have now begun to dislike or hate him. Parenting is a two-wheeled chariot. The presence of you as well as your husband is required to give the children a proper upbringing and emotional nurturing. Also, be careful that you do not badmouth your husband in front of your children. This will go a long way in enabling the kids to have a good relationship with their dad.

Remember, You are a Mother First

It is good to be friendly with the children and crack jokes with them. However, you should never forget that you are still the only adult in the house and, in the absence of the father, it is your duty to provide the needed guidance and discipline to the children. It is essential for the children to respect you and even fear you if they have done anything wrong.

Live and Forget

Do not be stuck on the past. You should learn to forget and move on. You still have your whole life in front of you. Try to make the most of it. Make it a point to enjoy your days with your children and friends. Do not ignore your own needs. Sometimes, it is good to pamper yourself with a movie or an evening spent with friends socialising.
